Val joined the staff team as a volunteer in 2010. Her passion is to walk with people and help them to become more aware of God in their daily lives. She offers individual Spiritual Direction and contemplative prayer in group settings. As a spiritual director, Val offers a service of ‘prayerful conversation’ for anyone who wants a companion to journey with them in praying, listening and responding to God’s love and direction in their lives. Val has broadened our worship and prayer traditions at Philpott Church by introducing us to Contemplative Prayer, Taize worship, and Prayer Retreats that allow us to get away and spend time personally listening for God’s voice. Says Val: “Many of us need help in slowing down, managing distractions, and drawing near to God through scripture and prayer. Contemplative prayer is just one of many spiritual disciplines that can help people grow in their relationship with God.”
Val’s passion for this flows naturally from her background and experience. Her background includes: B.A.(Psych.- Western); M.A. (Counseling Psych.- Wheaton Grad. School), D.Min.(MacDiv), and specific training in Spiritual Direction. She continues to work part-time as a counsellor at the Turner Medical Clinic in Dundas, and is an advisor for field-placement students at MacDiv.
Val enjoys spending time with people whether it’s prayer, spiritual direction, book clubs, movies, traveling, or biking.
Val is married to David, and they have two adult children, Jessica and Jonathan.
